1862-1947 William 'St Thomas' Smith, born in Belfast (Ireland). In his youth he came to Beaverton, Ontario (1869) and later went to St Thomas, Ontario (1887). Mainly self-taught but had some lessons at Central Ontario School of Art, Toronto, where he was given the name St Thomas to distinguish him from another William Smith. Travelled in England and France. A.R.C.A. in 1902. Hon. LL.D. (Western Ontario), 1940. Died at St Thomas. Landscape and marine painter.
