Jean Dallaire

1916-1965 Painter, illustrator, muralist. Jean-Philippe Dallaire, born at Hull, Quebec. Studied with Francois Clapin at Hull Technical School, 1932-1933; with Charles Goldhamer, Peter Haworth, Robert Ross, and Elisabeth Wyn Wood at Central Technical School, Toronto, 1935; with Charles Maillard and Felix Charpentier at Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Montreal, 1938; with Maurice Denis and Georges Desvallieres at Ateliers d'Art Sacre, Paris, 1938; with Jean Lurcat at Aubusson, France, summer 1949. Painted murals for the Dominican monasteries at Ottawa and Fall River, Massachusetts (1936-1938). Won a Province of Quebec prize for painting in 1938 and studied in Paris with Maurice Denis and Andre Lhote. Under Lurcat's influence he turned to surrealism; has also made some tapestry designs. He was interned in France during the second World War and returned to Canada in 1945. Died in Vence, 27 November, 1965.
