The Elliott Louis Gallery is pleased to announce that we are participating in this year's Drawn Festival with a group exhibition, curated by art historian Lynn Ruscheinsky, Ph.D., bringing together some of the most intriguing established and emerging artists of 2009.
Included in the show are established gallery artists Bruce Pashak, Nancy Boyd, Scott Plumbe and Mandy Boursicot with young up-and-comers Andrew Tong, Carolyn Stockbridge, Derek Dunlop and Jeremiah Birnbaum.
While stylistically and thematically diverse, each member of the group brings a uniquely contemporary handling of their subject matter and materials. From Pashaks, probing of relations, affects and becomings into which both human beings and animals are thrown, Dunlops and Birnbaums conceptual investigation of the nihilistic tendencies of male cultural identity, Stockbridges comment about the human within the urban centre to Boursicots, Boyds and Plumbes unique capacity to visualize the very forces of earth and all that populates it, these artists each respond to their surroundings in a unique and engaging way.
Bruce Pashak will give an artist talk, "Drawing as a Dionysian Experience/Experiment" at the gallery on Wednesday, July 29, at 7 pm. Vancouver artist Bruce Pashak creates images that simultaneously compel us with their beauty while causing us to question some of the basic assumptions that underpin traditional and contemporary aesthetics. Pashak will discuss drawing from a philosophical perspective, claiming it as a viable genre unto itself. Reflecting on his own work as a backdrop, he will argue that drawing can be an effective voice for the communication of relevant social criticism and art theory.
