From day one, Andrew, Bird, McTaggart has had two things on the brain; art and airplanes. So it seems only natural that he has made both his career.Andrew, 31, is a pilot with Air Canada and has been flying for fourteen years, but has been developing his artistic talent for 28 years. In fact, and this will come as a big surprise, he remembers drawing airplanes on his bedroom wall at three years old.
But it wasn’t until a friend of Andrew’s lent him his carving tools, that the passion for working with wood really “took off.”
While Andrew was based in Comox, British Columbia, with 442 Search and RescueSquadron where he was able to take full advantage of the outdoors. The wildlife he saw on his many diving and kayaking trips inspired his carvings.
Andrew says, “The life above and below the seas of the West Coast is always inspiring and presents endless ideas for future projects.”
As an emerging artist, Andrew continues to explore the styles and method that lend a “real West Coast feeling “ to his projects. The medium, so far, has been western red cedar, a favorite wood of West Coast native carvers.
Andrew has just come to the start of what he hopes to be a long career in both flying and art and is excited to share what inspires him with everyone else who lives on or visits the west coast.
