James Brown Wyeth was born in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania on July 6, 1946 and came into the Wyeth menage well endowed to carry into the third generation their remarkable tradition of creative accomplishment. Just as the Barrymores held the title of "Royal Family of the American Theatre," the Wyeths are acknowledged as the reigning family of American Art. Jamie's grandfather, N.C. Wyeth, was on of the most beloved painters and brilliant illustrators of the early 20th century.Andrew Wyeth, among the leading artists of our time, his father. Jamie at the 6th grade level, having demonstrateds an exceptional artistic talent, was taken from the public schools and tutored in his studies at home, with his art training directed by his father. When Jamie was 20 years old, he was deemed ready for his first solo show. It opened with great acclaim in New York at the M. Knoedler Gallery. "Draft Age," one of the paintings in the initial show was described by a Yale University Professor Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr. as follows: "This is a remarkable work. A portrait of a young tough slouched cockily in his leather jacket, proud yet vulnerable behind his sunglasses and his 'D.A.' haircut, it is sharply focused, direct, realistic, formally closer to Warhol and Pop Art than to the Brandywine Tradition. Yet it is not Pop, for it is far more than an image." Among many museum collections in which his work is represented are the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., Museum of Modern Art, New York; William A. Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine; Brandywine River Museum, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.
