Edwin Holgate

1892-1977 Edwin Headley Holgate, born at Allandale, Ontario. Pupil of William Brymner at the school of the Art Association of Montreal. Studied in Paris before the First World War at the Grande Chaumiere and Julian academies, and again in Paris, 1921-1922, at the Academie Colarossi. Was influenced by Morrice. Returned to Canada in 1922 and settled in Montreal. In 1926 with A.Y. Jackson he painted on the Skeena River, British Columbia. Made decorations for the Totem Pole Room, Chateau Laurier hotel, Ottawa, about 1929. Member of the Group of Seven, 1931-1933, and founding member of the Canadan Group of Painters, 1933. A.R.C.A. in 1934, R.C.A. in 1935. Taught at the school of the Art Association of Montreal, 1935-1940. Official war artist with the Air Force in Canada and England, 1934-1944. Painter and woodcut artist.
